June 10 Event at Seward Park raises money for orphaned animals

SEATTLE – Join the thousands of animal lovers and outdoor enthusiasts who are expected to run and walk with their pets in the Seattle Animal Shelter’s eighth annual Furry 5K Fun Run & Walk on Sunday, June 10, 10 a.m. in Seward Park. Pre-register by May 25 and receive a race T-shirt. All proceeds benefit the Help the Animals Fund.

Last year, the Furry 5K raised more than $100,000, with more than 2,700 runners and walkers, 1,500 dogs and one courageous cat taking part. This year’s goal is to exceed $110,000. To register for this year’s race or find out more about sponsorship opportunities, visit: www.furry5k.com

“Community support is critical to our efforts to rehabilitate sick and injured animals,” says Shelter Director Don Jordan. “As we celebrate our 35th anniversary this year, we are reversing a trend and saving more lives. Last year we had more than twice as many adoptions as euthanasias. The funds raised at the Furry 5K, combined with our volunteer and foster care programs, bring us closer to our goal where one day no adoptable animal will have to be needlessly put to death.”

The Furry 5K features awards and prizes for top finishers, including the first three dogs to cross the finish line with their human companions. Prizes donated by local merchants will also be given to random race participants.

The Help the Animals Fund meets the requirements for “Matching Fund” programs within certain companies and organizations and donations are tax deductible (consult with your tax advisor of course).

Seattle’s Help the Animals Fund was established in 1977 to provide critical veterinary care to sick, injured, and abused animals, giving them a second chance at finding new homes and families. The Fund also supports the activities of the Shelter’s volunteers and foster parents. The Shelter takes in more than 7,000 stray and owner-surrendered dogs and cats each year, with annual veterinary expenses often exceeding $200,000. Without the money from the Help the Animals Fund, many of the animals the Shelter is able to save would otherwise have to be euthanized.

Since opening its doors in 1972, the Seattle Animal Shelter has helped hundreds of thousands of people and their pets. The Shelter educates potential adopters about responsible pet ownership; provides sanitary, safe and humane housing for impounded animals; matches adoptable animals with new responsible owners; provides a low-cost spay/neuter program; enforces animal control ordinances relating to the leash law, scoop law, nuisance barking and vicious animals; and prevents cruelty to animals.

Animals are available for adoption seven days a week from noon to 6 p.m. For more information about the Seattle Animal Shelter, call 206-386-PETS (7387) or visit the Shelter’s website at www.seattleanimalshelter.org.  The Seattle Animal Shelter is located at
